Teaching Notes for Presenting - ACTS part one

For the teaching of this part of the Overview of the Bible, we could split it into 3 parts:

1. Old Testament

2. Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John

3. Acts and the rest of the New Testament. Even though Revelation is done as another module.

The Early Church or Acts part one - teaching notes you can print out.

 

1. He is not here - Luke 24:5-8 - April 3rd 33AD

In Luke, we see Jesus risen from the dead.
The angel speaks: "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not Here; He has risen!"

Remember Jesus rose from the dead.
Which is a cornerstone of the Christian faith.

Possible date of Jesus' crucifixion was Nisan 14th, Spring Equinox, Friday April 3rd 33AD.

Equinox means sun is over the equator.

 

2. 40 Days - Acts 1:6-11 - Thursday 14th May 33AD.

40 days after the resurrection of Jesus, he goes to his heavenly home.
One of the possible dates is, Thursday 14th May 33AD.

We know he will come back the same way he went.

 

3. Jesus goes home back to Heaven - Acts 1:9-11 Thursday 14th May 33AD

Jesus went back to Heaven in order to send the Holy Spirit to his followers.

We know he will come back the same way he went.

 

4. Matthias - replaces Judas May - June 33AD - Acts 1:12-26

The Eleven Apostles chose Matthias to replace Judas as one of the twelve Apostles.

Judas had just killed himself after betraying his friend Jesus

 

5. 33AD - Start of the Early Church - The beginning Acts 2:1-13 - 33AD, 24th May

This date was chosen as the start of the early church because the Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost.
Pentecost the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles.

The Holy Spirit breathed life into the early church.
 
The person of the Holy spirit comes and anoints each one in the upper room.

 

6. 50th Day - after Jesus rose from the dead Thursday 24th May 33AD - Acts 2:1-41

The day of Pentecost or Shavuot, late Spring thanksgiving for the first harvest.
7 weeks or 50 days after Passover, the time when Jesus rose from the dead.

 For the believing Jews in the Messiah it was just like any other day dedicate to their Lord and Master.

 

7. Pentecost Fire - Thursday 24th May 33AD - Acts 2:1-41
 The Fire Symbol is used to symbolize the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost or Shavuot.

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

Remember God and the burning bush Exodus 3:-4:17

Also read Acts 18 and Acts 19

 

8. Peter preaches - his first sermon Acts 2:14-41 - Sunday 24th May 33AD

Peter's 1st sermon. 3000 people came to believe, and were baptized in Jesus' name.

Peter Addresses the Crowd

The crowd was there for a Jewish the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost which is also called Feast of Weeks see Leviticus 23:15ff or First Harvest e.g. wheat.

This feast is Late Spring and 7 weeks or 50 days after the feasts of Passover, Unleavened Bread and 1st Fruits.

 

9. Community - about 33-34AD - Acts 2:42-47

The early disciples formed a community of believers.

Based on their way of life.

 

10. Peter heals a cripple - Acts 3:1-26 - 33AD

Peter heals a cripple and causes quite a stir.

Then Peter Addresses the Crowd.

 No cripple could take full part in Jewish life.
Healing the Lame, Blind, and Raising the Dead was one of the signs of the Messiah.

 

11. Peter's 2nd Sermon - Acts 3:11-26

 

12. Peter's 3rd Sermon - and 1st jail - Acts 4:1-22
     Peter and John Before the Sanhedrin
   PETER IN COURT AGAIN

33-34 AD - Acts 4:5-22
Peter, after healing the cripple man, ends up in front of the ruling Jewish leaders (Sanhedrin).
Questioned Peter, under whose authority he did this deed, the healing of the cripple.

The Sanhedrin the law makers of the day.

The high priest, his family and associates were members of the party of the Sadducees,
this group of Jews were against Jesus and his followers.

Unschooled meant they had not gone to Training School to be come a Priest.
Even though as a Jew he would know his Bible.

 

13. Ananias and Sapphira - Winter, Dec- Feb 34AD - Acts 5:1-11
    A HIGH THAT TURNED SOUR

      All the believers were of one accord and shared what they owned, even selling land and houses.
      Giving the money to the apostles who then gave the money to those in need.

      But there was sin (not doing things God's way) in the camp.
     So we get the story of Ananias and Sapphira, husband and wife.
     This couple were believers.

 

14. Peter's 4th Sermon - 34-35 AD - Acts 5:17- 42

Peter was arrested and put in a public jail

Released by God and told to share about Jesus.

Peter in front of the Jewish council (Sanhedrin) again.

 The high priest, his family and associates were members of the party called the Sadducees, and many from this group of Jews were against Jesus and his followers.
because Jesus was being acknowledged as God's son.   

 

15. Finding 7 Helpers - 35AD - Acts 6:1-7

7 helpers were chosen to help to do the jobs that needed to be done,
so that the 12 Apostles could concentrate on prayer and teaching.

 This was the start of using stewards or deacons. 

 

16. Stephen Killed - April 35AD Acts 6:8-8:3
      Those against the teaching of Jesus killed Stephen.

      Stephen still acknowledged Jesus in his death.
      He saw glory of God just before he died.

      Saul later to be called Paul was at this event.

      Stephen is the Greek form of Stepanas which means Crowned.

 

17. Philip Preaches - 35AD - Acts 8:26-40

Philip goes on a preaching tour.

That included an Ethiopian official who he baptized in water.
God then took him away to Atzotus.
Philip then preached his way up to Caesarea.
  
Philip was classed as a prophet and his
Four daughters were also classed as prophetesses.

 

18. Paul - meets God 35-37AD - Acts 9:1-9

Paul becomes a follower of Jesus after an encounter with God about noon on the road to Damascus.

Paul's background is a 1st century Rabbinical Jew.

After this encounter with God. God changed Saul's name to Paul.

Paul means little and Paul was small in stature.

 Paul studied under the greatest teachers of the time and was heading for the top.
Paul was a disciplined learner and one of the best in his search for Knowledge.

Paul was to become known as Paul the apostle.
Was on his way with a letter to the priests in Damascus to arrest Christians and put them in jail.

 

19. Paul - escapes in a basket 40 AD - Acts 9:25

Paul became a danger to himself and the other disciples.
When he started telling everybody that Jesus was the Messiah.

  Many cities had windows or openings contained in the upper parts of their walls.    

 

20. Peter's vision and 5th Sermon - 40AD - 41AD - Acts 10:1-48

Peter's dream and the actions that followed.

Peter was having a rest before lunch.

Siesta starts with lunch and ends about 1500 (3pm) after the heat of the day.

This happened about 40-41AD.
 Or 7 to 8 years after the start of the book of Acts.

 

21. Barnabas - 43AD - Acts 11:22-26

      Without Barnabas (Son of Encouragement), a Levite from Cyprus, a prophet and apostle, we may not have had Paul's ministry.
When Barnabas was sent out on a mission to Antioch by the apostles in Jerusalem and believing he needed Paul's help,
he went looking for him in Tarsus. He found Paul and brought him back to Antioch to minister together.

Again it was Barnabas who took Mark, also know as John Mark, under his wing when Paul rejected him.
Later, after being trained by Barnabas, Mark was of great assistance to Paul.

 

22. 43AD - first ten years
      We have just covered the first 10 years from 33AD to 43AD of the Book of Acts including chapter one to chapter 12.
      This covers what the Early Church did.

   &nb   Now we cover the next 10 years ending up in the Book of Acts Chapter 18 verse 22 finding what the Early church continued to do.
      The book of Acts spans 30 years and we have just covered the first 10 years

 

23. Peter gets - out of prison April 44AD - Acts 12:1-19

This is nearly the last time we hear of Peter.
Even though he carries on the work that His Lord and Master called him to do.
Peter wrote 1, 2 , 3 Peter.

John's brother James had just been martyred by Herod Agrippa 1,
the same man who put Peter into prison.

Peter expected to be looked after by his Friend Jesus.

Herod Agrippa 1 born 10BC, reigned for seven years as a client king 37AD - 41AD

Was eaten by worms Acts 12:23

 

24. James - wrote the letter James
   First New Testament book was written about 45AD-50AD.
This was written by James the half bother of Jesus.

In the order of the Bible Matthew is the First New Testament book.

The book of James is with Peter's, John's and Jude's letters near the back of the New Testament.   

 

25. Orphans and widows - 48AD - James 1:27

James wrote about looking after the weak in the body of the church.

James' letter is very practical for Christian living.

James was written about 48AD. The 1st New Testament book.


26. Paul and Barnabas - Spring April 48AD - Acts 13:1-3
Paul and Barnabas starts their first of three missionary trips, which spanned over period of 10 years.

 

27. Ship - at the port of Seleucia April 48AD - Acts13:4

Barnabas and Paul are sent on their way by the Holy Spirit.
They went down to Seleucia and sailed from there to Cyprus.

When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues.
Mark was with them as their helper he later wrote the Gospel of Mark.
 
  Travel was slow and dangerous eg storms pirates etc.
Sometimes traveling by sailing ship was quicker than walking. 

 

28. Paul Teaches - in Pisidain Antioch 48AD - Acts 13:13-52

Paul teaches at their local Synagogue (church) for two meetings.

 

29. Paul Stoned - they were trying to kill Paul 49AD - Acts 14:19-20

    Throwing rocks at a person by a mob was one way of killing a person.

 This was a very common way of doing away with someone.  

 

30. Paul Rests after the First trip - 49-50 AD - Acts 14:-15-40

Paul worked hard between trip one and trip two.

 Travel was even more dangerous in winter if not total impossible.

 

31. Galatians - 49AD - Paul's 1st Letter

Paul's 1st letter of 13 or 14 letters if the letter to the Hebrews is included.

Paul (1,859verses with Hebrews 2,162) wrote more verses than Luke (2,158 verses; 50,194 words) if  you include Hebrews.
John 1,415 verses 31,099 words.

   Remember Paul's background is a 1st century Rabbinical Jew.

 

32. Paul uses a Scribe - Oct-March 49AD - Acts 6:11-18
      The book of Galatians was probably Paul's first letter which was written approximately Oct-March 49AD - Acts 6:11-18
      For what ever reason Paul found it hard to write, may be age approx 50 years old a good age for those times.
      Also remember he had had a hard life. Maybe damaged hands or poor eye sight, or combinations of what ever?
      Paul  used to dictate to a scribe all his letters it was the done thing in those times even for the educated.

 

33. Slave Girl - 50AD - Acts 16:16-22
     A slave girl who told fortunes by an evil spirit.

    7 out 10 people were slaves.

 

34. Philippian Jailer - 50AD - Acts 16:16-22

      Paul put in jail for teaching about Jesus.

      If a Roman solder lost a prisoner he was killed.

 

35. Idol to unknown god 51AD - Acts17:16-34

      An Idol is some thing you put in place of Jesus in you life.

 

36. Anger - 51AD - Acts 18:6 or Acts 18:12-17
      We are told not to get angry.
     Anger:-  2 Thessalonians 3:5  Do not treat him as an enemy.

    
(3rd book that Paul wrote 51AD approx which is about same time as Acts 18:1-18 as he was in Corinth March
     
51-September 52.

 

37. Return back by Ship - Nov. 52AD - Acts18:22
      Caesarea was built by King Herod the Great in 13BC and the harbor was known as Sebastos, was completed in 9BC.

       Acts 18:22 - When he (Paul) landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch.

       Other mentions of this harbor - Peter and Cornelius Acts 10, Paul Acts ??AD as he left for Rome AD60.

 

38. 2nd Rest - between trips two and three - Acts 18:22
      When he (Paul) landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church and then went
      down to Antioch.

 

39. 53AD - and the End of the 1st 20 YEARS of the book of Acts
