Teaching Notes Bible Module of: EASTER OR PALM SUNDAY TO PENTECOST

For this teaching of this part of the Overview of the Bible  by bibleview.org.

We could split the bible into 3 parts:

1. Old Testament
2. Gospels - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John
3. Acts and the rest of the New Testament.
Even though Revelation is done as other module.

1. Zacchaeus the tax collector - Waiting for Jesus up a tree  Luke 19:1-10
    Jesus said "Zacchaeus , come down immediately, I must stay at your house today."
    Jesus stays with Zacchaeus for a meal; noon or night meal we are not told.
    Then, Jesus leaves Jericho and walks towards Jerusalem and his death in 10 days time.

    Zacchaeus in Hebrew means Pure One.

    Jesus sets out from Jericho [City of Palms] to Jerusalem about 24km (15miles), approximate 4-8 hours all up hill.
    Jericho 825 feet or 251 meters below sea level and Jerusalem 2,610 feet or 796 meters above sea level.
    A total climb of 3,425 feet or 1,044 meters. The custom was that you started early morning with rest in the middle of day.

    The hill or tel of Jericho has been occupied since 800BC and is some 800 feet or 230 meters below sea level.
    The Dead Sea 1,300 feet or 400 meters below sea level is the lowest area in earth below sea level.
    Were as the Sea of Galilee or the Lake of Tiberius is only 700 feet or 200 meters below sea level

2. Hand - Perfume for Jesus six days out from his death  Luke 11:1-3 or John 12:1-11
    Six days before Passover (Easter). Mary with very expensive perfume used for anointing the dead, anointed Jesus for his burial.
    This happened at the house were Mary and Lazarus lived. Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead.

    This is the first anointing with perfume the other was two days out, Mary, of Lazarus , Martha, and Mary,
    some how knew Her friend was going to die.
    While around her those Jesus was teaching still could not understand this was about to happen.

    The jars were sealed and had to be broken for the contents to be used.
    So it was use the jar once and throw it away.
    The perfume was usually used on the wearer at their death.
    The perfume cost about a years wages.

3. Donkey - Jesus on a donkey-triumphal entry  Luke 19:28-44
    It's the day of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem as the Messiah,
    with 5 days to go to His death.

    We now call this day Palm Sunday, which could have been 4th April 33AD.
    It was the Jewish 10th Nisan.

    Called the triumphal entry.

    We do not know the name or breed of the donkey Jesus used.

4. Palm tree - Palm trees were used to line the road  John 12:12-19
    Jesus friends put their cloaks and palm-tree leaves on the road, and waved palm leaves in the air.

    The event is called the triumphal entry.

    Palm trees are a native of Israel and used for decoration in festivals.

5. Lamp - Lamp- parable of the Ten brides attendants  Matthew 25:1-13
    Jesus taught in parables. One was about The Lamps of the Ten Bridesmaids.

    The numerous Parables, sayings and warnings in Matthew 21:23-25:46 were spread over 4 to 6 days

    Lamps were used for lighting and they burnt an oil mix. For special occasions you could add perfumes.

6. Cross - Jesus predicts his crucifixion in two days time  Luke 22:1-6

     Jesus predicts His Crucifixion two days hence ( Jewish Friday) 12th Nisan.

     Jesus predicts his own death in two days time by dieing on the cross by a method called crucifixion.

     There are other times Jesus predicts his death by crucifixion in the gospels can you think of any?

     It was only the cross piece that was carried by the prisoner. As the headed to the execution area beside the city's rubbish dump.
     A area where they had fires burning all the time. The rocky outcrop is the same place Abraham took his son Isaac as a sacrifice to God.

7. Hand - 2nd anointing of oil 2 days out Matthew 26:6-13 and Mark 14:1-9
     Two days to Passover. A second woman anoints Jesus for his burial with the very expensive perfume.
     This time the feast is at Simon the Leper's house.
     Jesus had three recorded meals in 6 days. These were 6th day, 2nd day and The Last Supper.

     This is the second time Jesus is anointed for his death this time two days out.
     The oil cost about a years wages and the container was destroyed before the the oil could be used.


8. Sandal - Jesus washes his disciples feet  Luke 22:1-38
     It was the habit that the second to lowest slave removed the sandal and the lowest slave washed the feet.
     Jesus chose, as their teacher, to do both himself. Why?

     The 2nd to bottom slave took of the sandal and the bottom slave washed the feet a very smelly and unpleasant task.

9. Judas - Judas betrays Jesus  Luke 22:1-6

     Judas betrays Jesus because, as the keeper of the money, he had stolen some for his own use.
     Judas was not planning for the Priests to kill Jesus.

     Judas-[this picture no.9-Judas] Went to the Priests about 2 days before The feast of Un-leaven bread or Passover
     after the incident in Number 6-Hand the 2nd time at Simon the leapers place not like the 1st time were it was done
     by Mary at her house were she lived with Martha and  Lazarus.          
     Lazarus lived 4 days earlier 6 days before the Passover [No.1-hand].. Matthew 26:14-16, Mark 14:10-11, Luke 22:1-6,
    John does not mention his incident.

     Judas at the last supper:- Matthew 26:20-30,  Mark 14:17-26, Luke 20-23, John 13:2 & 13:18-30
     Judas helps arrest Jesus:- Matthew26:47-56, Mark14:46-54, Luke 22:47-48,  John18:2-11
     Judas death:- Matthew 27:3-10, Acts 1:15-26
 
    Judas (Greek form of Judah which means praise) came from the south of Israel while the rest of the disciples came from around
    were Jesus grew up in the north of Israel.

10. Discourse - Last supper discourses  John 14:1-31

     Jesus farewell discourse to his disciples in the upper room and on the way to the prayer spot in the garden of Gethsemane.

     The Discourses were spoken in the upper room were they had just eaten the Passover.


11. 3 Prayers - 3 prayers, for himself, for disciples and for us.  John 17:1-26

     Jesus three intercessory prayers:- For Himself, for his disciples, for all believers.

     3 prayer now at the olive grove or garden on the mount of Olives called Gethsemane.


12. Jesus Prayers - More prayers on the Mount of Olives.  Luke 22:39-46

     In the garden, the night before his death, Jesus spends time in prayer to His father.

     Jesus prayer Bloody sweat can happen under extreme mental pressure.

13. Soldier - Soldiers come for Jesus  Luke 22:47-53

     The soldiers came at night to get Jesus.

     These soldiers were from the chief priests and the temple guard. John says a speria an army cohort of 600 men
     the other three gospel writers say a multitude or a great multitude with swords and clubs.
     What could two swords the disciples do against this group of soldiers this size?

14. Peter - Peter uses a sword  Luke 22:47-51
     Peter cuts an ear off one of the soldiers who had come to arrest Jesus.

15. Jesus - Jesus arrested  Luke 22:52-53

     Jesus was arrested at night by those who opposed Him.

16. 6 Trials - Jesus was on trial 6 times  Luke 22:47-23:25

     1st Trial- Annas; 2nd Trial- Caiaphas- both illegal because before day light; 3rd Trial- Sanhedrin after day light to make it legal;
     4th Trial- Pilate for      the 1st time; 5th Trial- Herod Antipas, 6th Trial- Pilate for the 2nd time.

     Also, Jesus was repeatedly mocked and beaten by the soldiers before, in between and after the trials' on the way to his death.

17.  Friday - Friday 

     Some commentators say Jesus Death could be as early as Wednesday because they say the year Jesus died there was a special
     or high Sabbath one or two days before the normal weekly Sabbath.


18. Annas - 1st trial - Annas the high Priests father in law  John 18:12-14

     Annas, the Chief Priest's- Caiaphas Father-in-law.Jesus is brought in front of him for the first of six trials.


19. High Priest -2nd trial  - Caiaphas the high priest  Luke 22:54-71
     Before Chief Priest Caiaphas and Sanhedrin before day light an illegal trial, for the second of six trials.

20. Rooster - Rooster crows 3 times  Luke 22:31-34 and Luke 22:54-62

21. Jesus - 3rd trial in front of the Sanhedrin  Luke 22:66-71

     Jesus at His third trial before the Sanhedrin (Jewish Council) after day light to make the process legal.

22. 1st Pilate - 4th trial in front of Pilate  Luke 23:1-6
     Jesus in front of Pilate the Roman Governor of Judea for His fourth trial, the 1st of two times

     read also Matthew 27:2,11-14, Mark 15:1-5, John 18:28-38


23. Herod - 5th trial in front of Herod  Luke 23:6-12
     For Jesus fifth trial, Jesus was brought before Herod Antipas the Governor of Galilee
     and Perea, 4BC-39AD, son of Herod the Great.


24. 2nd Pilate - Sixth trial, again before Pilate.  Luke 23:13-25
     This time Pilate wanted to release Jesus 

     Pilate ruled as a Roman governor between 26AD and 36AD

25. Jesus - Jesus takes his death tool with him Jesus forced to carry his death tool  Luke 23: 26-46
     Jesus on the way to die on the cross.

26. Cross - Jesus dies on the cross  Luke 23:26-46
     The Crucifixion Jesus was nailed to the cross and left to die.

     also read Matthew 27:33-50, Mark15:24-33, John 19:18-28


27. Soldiers - Soldiers seal the tomb  Matthew 27:62-66
     The soldiers sealed the tomb. Then, they stood guard for the next three days, in four hour shifts of four soldiers each.

     These were regular Roman soldiers called a watch 4 soldiers changed every four hours.
     These soldiers were not from the temple guard like the group that came to imprison Jesus.
     They would die if their prisoner escaped.


28. They made Sure - They make sure  Matthew 27:62-66
     Those Jewish leaders who were against Jesus sealed the tomb so His body could not be stolen.

     A cord was stretched across the stone and an official seal with clay was fastened at each end so it could be detected
     if the grave stone was moved.


29. Sunday - 1st Sunday and...  Luke
     Time frame, 1st Sunday of 7 Sundays till Pentecost. Sunday is the 1st day of the Jewish week, also the day of Jesus resurrection.

30.Tomb - The open empty tomb  Luke - 24:2-8
     The Tomb with the stone door rolled back. Jesus body is no longer inside.

     The dead were placed in a cave cut out of a rock it had shelves to lay out the dead on them.
     A big rock was used as the door that took a number of people to move.

31. He is Not Here - He is Not Here He has risen  Luke 24:6
     The angel says to the women Jesus has risen as he said he would so "He is not here Jesus has risen in deed.

     The 1st Sunday of 7, till day the of Pentecost.

32. Come See - Come see where He lay  Matthew 28:1-10
     The angels said to the women come and see where he lay.
     So they may believe what Jesus had said he would rise from the dead.


     Also read, Matthew 28:1-7, Mark 16:2-8, Mark 16:1, Luke 21:1, Luke 24:1-8, John 20:1-18, Acts 1:11


33. He is Risen - Jesus has risen indeed  Luke 24:1-12
     Yes the women started to believe the angels that Jesus had risen from the dead.

     Even the disciples did not believe the women because there words were nonsense
     or as in the Greek leros is medical term for a delirium.
     These two women who were going to look after a dead person were the first people to see Jesus after his resection.
(1st Sunday)

34. Sunday2nd Sunday  Luke
     Time frame, the 2nd Sunday or 7 days after the resurrection of Jesus.

35. Fish - 153 fish  John 21:1-25
     The disciples had been out all night without catching any fish, remember they were fishermen.
      Under Jesus guidance, they caught 153 fish in one cast of the net.

     How did Jesus get the big shoal of fish to arrive at the right time?


36. Sunday - 3rd , 4th  and 5th  Sundays  John 20:24-31

    Time frame the 3rd , 4th and 5th Sundays or 14, 28 days and 35 days after the resurrection of Jesus.

    Now up to the 3rd, 4th Sunday and 5th Sunday.

    Time is ticking away for the next big event the day of Pentecost.


37. Jesus - Jesus goes back home The ascension   Luke 24:50-53

     Jesus goes back to heaven this event is called The Ascension...This happened 40 Days after the resurrection.
     If 33AD is the year of Jesus resurrection the day is April 3rd.
     If 33AD or 27th Iyaris the day of the resurrection. Thursday 14th May.

     Ascension Day 40 days after the Crucifixion and 10 days before Pentecost.


38. 500 people - Jesus is seen by over 500 people  1 Corinthians 15:1-11
     Over 500 people saw Jesus after His resurrection over a period of 40 days up to the day he went back Home.
 

12 different recorded appearances of Jesus:

    1st of 12  The appearance of Jesus to Marry Magdalene Sunday 17th or 21st of Nisan
                    Matthew 28:1, Mark 16:9-11, John 20:11-18

    2nd of 12  The appearance of Jesus to the other women Matthew 28:1

    3rd of 12  The appearance of Jesus to two disciples (Cleophas and another) on the road to Emmaus
                     Mark 16:12-13, Luke 24:13-32, John 24:33-35, 1 Corinthians 15:5

    4th of 12  The news of the appearance of Jesus to Simon Peter Luke 24:33-35, 1 Corinthians 15:5

    5th of 12  The appearance to the astonished disciples (Thomas absent) with a commission
                     Mark 16:14, Luke 24:36-43, 1 Corinthians 15:5

    6th of 12  The appearance of Jesus the disciples the next Sunday night John 20:26-31

    7th of 12  The appearance of Jesus to seven disciples besides the Sea of Galilee John 21:1-25

    8th of 12  Jesus appears to the eleven disciples on a mountain in Galilee Matthew 28:16-20, Mark 16:15-18

    9th of 12  Jesus appears to about 500 hundred people on a mountain in Galilee 1 Corinthians 15:6

    10th of 12   Jesus appears to James his brother 1 Corinthians 15:7, Galatians 1:9

    11th of 12  Jesus appears to the disciples with another commission Luke 24:44-49 & Acts 1:3-8

    12th of 12  Jesus appears to the disciples with another commission Luke 24:44-49 & Acts 1:3-8



39. Sunday - 6th Sunday
     Time frame: The 6th Sunday or 42 days after the resurrection of Jesus.

42. Pentecost Fire: - on Pentecost day like tongues of fire - Acts 2:1-13
  Pentecost Fire - click Acts for the next part- The Early Church Acts 2:1-13

Time frame, the 7th Sunday or 50 days or 7 weeks after Passover. Also the 7th Sunday after the resurrection of Jesus. Called Pentecost, Feast of Weeks or Shavuot also called Whitsunday?
Possible dates include: Sunday May 32AD, Sunday 24th May 33AD, which is early summer in Israel.
