What is to be made of Scripture passages that seem to minimise the importance of animal sacrifices? Eg:- Isaiah 1:11-17, Hosea 6:6, 1 Samuel 15:22, Psalm 40:7-9. The answer is that animal sacrifices offered by people who lack compassion, whose “hands are full of blood”, and who do not “seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless fairly or plead on behalf of the widow”, are not merely useless but are “offering an abomination”. Micah 6;6-8 asks the question as to how to come before God and it also answers it with what is required; ‘to do justly, love mercy and walk in humility with your God”. God has never regarded sacrifices of the Old Covenant in themselves capable of removing the guilt of sin in a permanent way. Only those whose hearts are right can offer blood sacrifices that will please God; repentance, prayer and righteousness are necessary preconditions for an acceptable sacrifice, but not a substitute for it.
What repentant, prayerful and righteous Jews and Christians in the New Covenant must offer God is ‘a sacrifice of praise continually’, thanking him that Jesus has provided a once-for-all blood atonement for sin. Jewish New Testament Commentary. By David Stem. Commenting on Hebrews 9:22. Page 699.
With the destruction of the Temple, sacrificial offerings became impossible; but if the Temple is rebuilt, thank offerings, meal offerings, and praise offerings may be offered once again.
