约瑟带马利亚回伯利恒,因为所有男士必需各归各城,报名上册。
Joseph takes Mary to Bethlehem, because all males had to go to their home town to be registered.

罗马户口调查就是因纳税的原因,所以要数算所有以色列男士的数目。
As required by the Roman census which was a head count of Israel for taxation purposes.

罗马通常是每14年做一次户口调查。
Romans usually had a census every fourteen years.

背景信息:

约瑟和马利亚是大卫王的后裔. 以色列的王族。
Joseph and Mary were both descendant’s of King David. Israel’s royal family.

照着传统的安排马利亚和约瑟有婚约。
Mary and Joseph had an arranged marriage as was the custom of the time.

马利亚和约瑟的婚书已在安排婚约时签署。
The papers that make it legal were signed at the time of the arrangement of the marriage.

这可能在两个人没有见面下进行, 不像西方国家是在结婚时才签婚约的传统。
This may even have happened before the two people had met, not like our western custom where the legal papers are signed at the time of the marriage.
