Rome burns, 19 July AD64

The Great Fire of Rome, on 19 July AD64, burnt many parts of Rome.

Nero, whose name in Latin means black, was the ruling emperor.

This great fire spread quickly and burned for six days. It was not the only large fire Rome was to have.

Nero spent money from his own private funds to look after those who had their houses burnt and did not have food.

Rome had at least two more major fires, in the time of Vitellius in AD69 and under Titus in AD80.
